December 9th 2006: Humility

Not the humility that we ourselves adopt, but the humility of God.

You can see this amazing characteristic of God in the gentle tenderness and intimacy of the way he meets with us:

For this is what the high and lofty One says -

he who lives forever, whose name is holy:

"I live in a high and holy place,

but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit." (Isaiah 57:15)

So that although God is the God of heaven, he also chooses - with humility and gentleness - to make his dwelling in our hearts.

And we see this same humility of God in the person of Jesus Christ,

Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God

something to be grasped,

but made himself nothing,

taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness,

And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself

and became obedient to death -

even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:6-8)
